In recent months it has become easy to feel sorry for the WWE during what has to be the worst injury crisis in there history. Main event draws Shawn Michaels, Triple H, The Undertaker, Edge and Rey Mysterio have all fallen foul of lengthy injuries and RVD, Chris Jericho, The Big Show and Kurt Angle all departed in one way or another. This plus the loss of Chris Benoit and the negative media attention over the incident has been a huge strain on the WWE.
So why hasn’t TNA got the WWE in a submission hold they are struggling to escape?
All the focus appears to have been on the WWE and what they are going to do now but for me this is the perfect opportunity for TNA to step up and make it’s mark with the wrestling masses, so why hasn’t it.
TNA management may appear happy with the current fortunes of the company but behind the scenes they must be worried that as the number two promotion in America they have failed to make any real impact on the WWE during their little crisis.
TNA has had no major injury problems, brought in several major players and are now on a major network with Impact but yet there gains have been very little. Against a full strength WWE this would be exceptable but in it’s weakened state that cannot be the case, but with whom does the blame lay – The TNA Roster or with TNA management ?
The TNA roster is probably the strongest it has ever been but as of late several stars just aren’t performing like they where this time last year and as a result the PPV’s, which where getting a lot of wrestling critics excited a year ago, are also suffering.
On the face of it the TNA roster have little to complain about. Compared to the life of their WWE counterparts TNA superstars have it easy as they have none of the travelling and work far fewer days a year. Yet it appears TNA’s roster isn’t all smiles.
In the last month or so Konnan and Ron Killings have departed, six or seven guys have asked for release, Kurt Angle has told friends he was unhappy and The Dudleys have stated their desire to go back to the WWE. All this plus the failure to lure several stars like Goldberg, Lesner, Jericho and RVD leaves you wondering whether there is something going on behind the scenes that is causing unrest.
Some will immediately point the finger at Vince Russo. After all the timing of TNA’s current slump has coincided with his return to the company. However Russo doesn’t actually write the shows he is merely an advisor, how much authority he has in this role no one except TNA know for sure, so it is a little unfair to lay all the blame with Russo.
Jeff Jarrett’s return to the ring has also been touted as a reason as several stars are said to be a little pissed at the way Jarrett pushes himself above all others. I also feel this is a little harsh, like Triple H, he may hold himself in high regard but he his a proven main event performer and since Jarrett’s return he hasn’t placed himself in the title picture straight away.
I do however feel that it is TNA management who is to blame. If you look back at the TNA PPV’s from late 2005 upto the summer of 2006 you’ll not only notice there quality but you’ll also notice why the PPV’s stood out from what other companies where producing, The X Division.
The X division was what made TNA different from the WWE and it was what drew so many fans. The fans didn’t give a crap about Jarrett and whoever his latest victim was they where interested in AJ Styles, Chris Sabin, Petey Williams, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe and the rest of the X division mob but yet TNA is now starting to treat them little better than the WWE treat there cruiserweight’s .
Now TNA seem more interested in promoting matches with guys they brought in from the WWE. But let’s face the facts, apart from Angle and Christian none of these guys are going to take away the WWE’s fans. WWE released guys like the Dudleys and VKM for a reason – there fans just didn’t give a crap anymore. Despite this, rather than give them new gimmicks TNA sent them out to the ring doing the same routines fans had tired of months ago.
The use of the X division may be TNA’s biggest problem but it is closely followed by the tag team ranks. TNA not only had a great tag team division but it was also full of teams created by TNA – AMW, Team Canada and The Naturals but now with the exception of LAX it has become a graveyard for WWE rejects.
TNA is losing it’s personality, it is becoming a pale imitation of the WWE, and for this TNA management must take the blame.
If TNA hope to make any impact on the WWE’s stranglehold on wrestling then they need to create something unique and make sure the world knows about it.
When WCW was the top dog it was because they offered something different from the WWE and when WWE found itself behind WCW they reinvented themselves and returned to the top. WCW died when they tried to imitate the WWE’s style.
Fans who aren’t watching WWE aren’t watching because they want something different, and fans who stay tuned to WWE will only be turned by something unique.
If TNA continue to imitate rather than innovate then I fear TNA could go the way of WCW and tap out!
