Most of us hope that our so-called ‘leaders’ (politicians, CEOs, etc.) would provide leadership. In most cases, however, our expectations remain unfulfilled because most leaders don’t lead.

You could, of course, argue that it’s our expectation that’s the problem. And you could be right. Waiting for Godot is likely to be more successful than hoping for any meaningful sign of leader behavior from those we tend to look-to for leadership.

Why is this so?

To address this question, we need to go back to basics. ‘Leadership’ has attracted its fair-share of mumbo-jumbo and gobbledegook. When all the ‘experts’ have had their say, it’s generally accepted that leadership is taking people somewhere with you. This interpretation derives from the literal meaning of ‘leadre’, a Norse/Viking word, ‘the furrow in the field’.

There are, of course, many frameworks and theories of leadership. One of those comes from Kouzes and Posner in The Leadership Challenge (2002). According to these fellows, leadership is about five ‘practices’. Leaders

1. challenge the process,

2. inspire a shared vision,

3. model the way,

4. enable others to act, and

5 encourage the heart.

If you accept these practices, effective leadership is both transformational as well as transactional. Effective leadership transforms how people think, feel, and behave. Leaders help people find meaning and make sense of their world.

Let’s put this interpretation to the test. Select a so-called ‘leader’, and ask yourself, does he or she challenge, inspire, provide a good example, empower, and motivate us? Consider, for example, President Obama. He has demonstrated an ability to deliver inspirational speeches. He has, however, been found lacking in other areas. And President Obama differs from many other elected ‘leaders’ who seem to go missing in action.

The one behavior over which we have control is our own. So, rather than being critical of others’ lack of leadership, we need to consider how we can use this available information and examples to improve our leadership. We’re told from a wide variety of sources that the fish rots from the head down. We need to make sure that our leadership (or lack of it) does not become ‘on the nose’.

Dr Neil Flanagan is a practicing leader and writer. Not only does he know a great deal about leadership and leading but alo presents that information in easy-to-apply form. His best-selling book The Management Bible and e-Books on Leadership and management can be accessed by visiting http://www.justasktom.com.

How long will it take once the masses of sheeple know?

Enron fell in 24 days. Our house of cards is rotting and any person with a 401k has been ripped off. Any soldier that died died in vain. Your vote NEVER counted there is no democracy and this matrix is cracking fast.
Remember in Mexico the faulty voting? Or in Russia the poisoning? Do you know how easy a reciept would be to issue? You could go home check your vote and then we would have real democracy. All war is caused by the thieves of our collective futures.
Serious not one bit of research? One liners? Come on! Debate!!! Do you know what that means?

Your right, my mother works for the local council and during elections is used as a poll clerk. She tells me that your voting slip has a number which is given to the elector and the numbers are retained after the election as is your voting slip. Literally within a few minuets of making an enquiry the authorities can tell who and what party you voted for. She also tells me that both the police and council are known to check these unofficially when occasion arises. I personally think this stinks, but the present system allows for fraudulently voting to take place almost at will.

John Williams’ lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas’ beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film…

Hamlet [Blu-ray Book]

Hamlet [Blu-ray Book]

It’s the greatest work of literature, but nobody had ever filmed Hamlet uncut–until Kenneth Branagh went about the task for his lavish 1996 production. The result is a sumptuous, star-studded version that scores a palpable hit on its avowed goal: to make the text as clear and urgent as possible. Branagh himself plays the melancholy son of the Danish court, caught in a famous muddle about whether …
