Stirling, although the smallest city in Scotland, is acknowledged as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’. Situated in the Scottish heartlands, it is known to have been area of ‘neighbourly discord’ over the centuries, hence the number of defensive properties in the region. The castle fortress of Stirling is perhaps the most important and impressive of all Scottish castles.

Stirling Castle, Esplanade, Stirling

Without a definite date of construction, the ‘current’ Stirling Castle, remodelled during the 15th and 16th Centuries, was originally built around 1370, undergoing several restructurings and changes over the centuries at the behest of its many and various owners. While certainly the largest of the great Scottish castles, it is also of intense historical and architectural importance. James IV’s Great Hall within the castle is certainly the biggest medieval banqueting hall ever constructed in Scotland. The castle has a very strong connection with royalty – Mary Queen of Scots visited in 1543, Charles I’s made a coronation visit in 1633 and Prince Henry’s was baptised in the specially built Chapel Royal. It is also the setting for a number of sieges, the most notable being the failure of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746, It has become even more recognisable thanks to the setting of the film Braveheart.

Alloa Tower, Alloa Park

The Earls of Mar, immortalised in a song by rock band Genesis, lived in Alloa Tower in the 14th Century. Many Scottish kings and queens enjoyed a stay as guests of the Earls, including Mary Queen of Scots. Although now a ruin, it is noted for its very thick walls and original timber roof. The Italian-style staircase, built during the 18th Century, its roofing timbers and menacing dungeon are well worth a visit today

Castle Campbell, Dollar

Originally known as Castle Gloom, this dramatically located 15th Century castle belongs to the Clan Stuart. The 20 metre tall tower is perhaps one of the best-preserved of its type in Scotland, with four floors, two very famous but quite grotesque carvings in the ceiling and a storage cellar. Many say it is very much a storybook castle, and indeed its wonderful setting does much to suggest this, seated on a ledge overlooking the countryside. During its dramatic history, perhaps one of the most noted events saw the 8th Earl of Argyll having to choose his support between the King and Oliver Cromwell, swinging from Kind to Cromwell and the castle burning as a result after which the Earl was executed for treason

Doune Castle, Doune

Unusually, this fine-looking castle is the product of a single building period, with no later additions and is almost unchanged since it was first constructed in the late 14th Century. There is a 100ft (30 metre) tall gatehouse, the magnificent Lord’s Hall complete with large double fireplace and a musicians’ gallery that links the two towers of the castle. Originally a royal hunting lodge, it passed to the Earls of Moray towards the end of the 1500′s when it became more military, featuring in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Glencairn’s Rising and the Jacobite Rising. It fell into ruin by 1800 and was restored in 1880.

Culcreuch Castle, Fintry

The rectangular Culcreuch Castle, named after the successive Barons of Culcreuch, has been the clan seat of the Galbraiths (1320 to 1624) as well as home to the Napier family (1632 to 1796). It has three stories, attic and parapet as well as a slate roof. Of most notable historical interest, it was used to garrison the troops of Oliver Cromwell in 1654. Culcreuch Castle is said to be haunted by a number of ghosts, amongst which is a phantom harpist.

With part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park falling within the region, and both Edinburgh and Glasgow within easy reach, it’s not hard to see that Sterlingshire has a unique attraction of its own for the visitor seeking to get to know more about the history and heritage of ‘inner’ Scotland.

This article was written by James Smith, a contributing writer to WhichCastle.com, who specialise in providing comprehensive historical information on castles in Scotland, including the most impressive castles in Stirlingshire.
