Roleplaying is the act of pretending to be someone else, whether it’s a real person, or a fictional character. Vampire roleplaying has always enjoyed a certain amount of popularity, due to the bad boy image that these anti heroes have in mainstream popular culture. The release of movies such as Interview With the Vampire, as well as the more recent Twilight flicks, has brought this interest to an almost frenzied height. This has led to the development of a number of different vampire role playing games available on the internet.
Probably the most popular form of online roleplaying happens in large, multiplayer, graphical worlds such as Second Life. In these games players can create an avatar, customizing its appearance and clothing in order to develop the exact character they seek to play. In many cases these worlds are set up as a sort of free for all where you can take on the aspects of any type of character, including vampires.
The drawback to these games is that the worlds, and the actions of the players, are always limited by the forethought of the programmers who designed it. You can’t throw a pink elephant at a moose on rollerskates, unless all of those objects and actions are actually convergent and possible. While that’s not a common activity for a vampire, it’s still nice to have the option to be as creative as you like.
More literarily minded vampire enthusiasts often enjoy forum or chat room roleplaying more. These games are based on standard communication software, except that the twist is that they are used to tell collaborative stories. These stories are created in real time, as the individual characters recount what their words and actions are to the group.
These games afford unlimited creativity, but exist entirely in the imagination, with players having to envision the nature of the space, and the other people involved. This is a good exercise for creative thinking, but is beyond the abilities of some individuals.
There are also roleplaying social networking sites that are available for vampire interactions. These are a cross between graphical and literary communities, and are very similar to places such as facebook or myspace. On these sites players sign up as fictional characters, and then interact with one another across a variety of media including blogs, pictures, videos, forums, groups, and chat applications. This allows people to tell a complete multimedia story that can encompass every aspect of the characters life.
