I’ve never been a fan of terrain mats. Never liked them for model trains (that was years ago); and haven’t liked them for 40k terrain, either. However, while reviewing How to Make Wargames Terrain from Games Workshop again, I noticed they had a few uses for terrain mats. The 40k battlefield examples they showed that used the mats look fantastic.
These are different products today than the ones made on paper years ago. I’ve been experimenting with some mats from Woodland Scenics and so far they seem nice. I’m thinking about doing an entire new set of gaming boards for a new 40k battlefield look based on these.
One of the things I couldn’t believe is that you could use the vinyl mats to make hills. I figured that you’d end up with seams and wrinkles and other problems. However, you never know, and I gave it a try. I cut out a nice sized hill from polystyrene. Then I cut out a corresponding shape from the vinyl mat. I used spray on adhesive to fasten the two together to start. After that had dried a few minutes, I used a heat gun to mold the vinyl to the shape of the polystyrene. Remember if you do something similar to use the recommended safety precautions from the heat gun manufacture. Also remember that vinyl and polystyrene both emit toxic vapors when heated. Work in a very well ventilated area.
I was surprised at just how well this worked. It took a while, but the vinyl did shrink down to the shape of the hill. I had to be careful not to apply the heat gun for too long in one place — it would easily melt the polystyrene underneath the vinyl. I did have a few wrinkles and rubbed a bit of the turf off the mat; I applied more turf using the spray on adhesive.
The result is fantastic and will be a nice addition to my collection of 40k terrain.

Warhammer 40k Scales and scenery?
I make wargame terrain and would like some help sorting out the scale of certain things before I begin building, for example… door sizes and window sizes.
If anyone could help fill me in about base sizes and general conversions etc Id be much appreciated!
Base sizes of infantry are 25mm (1 inch) wide, with a few exceptions for flying models. Some characters, ogres, and large models such as Terminators come on 40mm bases. Exceptionally large models, such as Daemon Princes and some Tyranids, come on 50-60mm models.
Large flying vehicles such as the Valkyrie have their own large oval base.
Tanks do not have bases, but some people add them for fun. This is rare, however.
A door should be 1 1/2 inches tall and 1 inch wide. The models are on bases which raises their height, but when modelling, it does not matter. If you make the door taller, it will look strange.
The widow should be 3/4 off the ground and should be about 1 inch square.
