Vintage Game
Vintage Game

Call it nostalgia, or homage, or Victorian-inspired shabby chic. Crafters and scrappers are increasingly using vintage images, photos and clipart in their designs. Antique pictures can add color, sentiment, humor, and a reminder that the important things in life are timeless. If you want to use vintage illustrations or photos in your projects, you should be aware of three things: copyright considerations, types of materials, and possible sources.
Artwork is considered “in the public domain” if there are no laws or copyrights which restrict its use. This applies to all artwork (a) created before 1923, or (b) created by an artist who died at least 70 years before January 1 of the current year. All other artwork is covered by copyright protection, and you must secure permission to use it from its creator or publisher.
Almost any old, printed materials can yield interesting vintage images. Some materials, like photos, books and other publications, were intended to be permanent visual records. Other illustrated materials might fall under the definition of ephemera, meaning paper materials that were created for a single practical purpose, with no thought that they would be saved or preserved. When looking for vintage images, consider:
Publications or products:
- Book illustrations – look for pre-1923 publishing dates.
- Newspapers and magazines – pre-1923.
- Sheet music – prior to 1920, sheet music was printed in sizes approximately 10″ X 13″, and were usually printed in one or two-colors.
- Postcards – most antique, illustrated postcards were published before 1920.
- Stamps.
- Greeting cards – pre-1923 cards included all holidays and occasions.
- Paper decorations.
- Games and toys – paper dolls, bridge tallies, playing cards, game boards, etc.
- Clothing patterns.
Packaging and advertising:
- Boxes, can labels, crate labels, button cards, etc.
- Trade cards, signs, posters, displays, calendars, hotel and travel stickers, letterhead, fans, fliers, menus, business cards, blotters, brochures, matchbooks, programs, decals, etc.
Documents, letters and photographs:
- Official certificates, deeds, diplomas, bills of sale, etc.
- Personal and business correspondence, ledgers and other handwritten documents.
- Family photos.
Now – where to find these treasures? Start in your own house, among your books, your photos, and under that big pile of newspapers in the attic. Then ask to go through your relatives attics. Then drop hints among your friends and neighbors. Then go a-gathering:
- Yard sales.
- Estate sales.
- Book sales (check local libraries).
- Antique stores.
- Thrift and charity stores.
- Swap meets and flea markets.
- Online – search on eBay. Do a Google seach for “vintage images” or “free clip art.”
Remember, for most creative purposes a picture of the material is as good as the original. Unless you really don’t care to preserve the original, scan or photograph everything. Store your original materials safely, in acid-free packaging, away from light and moisture.
Sound like fun? Whether crafting or scrapbooking, vintage images can be wonderful inspirations and focal points.

The Documentary $5.42 If the Game’s G Unit-fueled debut–the most anticipated CD of early 2005–is supposed to be the Answer like Iverson, then what was the question? Well, when an emcee gets to rifle through 50 Cent’s Rolodex to handpick top-flight producers (Timbaland, Just Blaze, Kanye West), it’s a can’t-miss scheme, right? In this case, uh-huh. “Westside Story” is Game’s opportunity to remind crunk-come-latelys th… |

Buddy Holly Collection $19.49 Buddy Holly appeared, burned like a flare for a year and a half, and disappeared, leaving behind nothing that wasn’t heartfelt. Those are qualities gen… |
