parlor trick-you force a certain word to be chosen?

set-up: 1 word in each box of a 3×3 grid. Subject starts in one box and moves to a new box in certain manner based upon number of letters in word. At the end of each move the word in the new box is eliminated. Proceed until one word remains. This is the word the trickster has chosen before-hand, and I believe it is the center box. Now, does anyone know the guidelines for choosing the words and the rules for moving from box to box so the trick works?

There are any number of ways to FORCE this kind of trick, because it is just that – a FORCED TRICK. The method of selecting cards one after the other does not matter. The key to forcing the trick is knowing beforehand which card you want to be the last one. The manner in which cards are picked seems important, but it is actually irrelevant. The only thing that matters is making sure the card you intend to be REVEALED last remains until the end.

For example, suppose you are using a 3×3 grid and the center card is the card you want to reveal last. You could have the person choose a card (any card) to start from and spell his/her own name while moving – from left to right and top to bottom – to a new card with each letter in their name. If this pattern of movement ends on a card that is NOT the one you want to reveal last, you can discard it without revealing it. Or, you can turn that card over and use the word on it as the basis for moving to another card.

To choose the second card, maybe you want to move from top to bottom and left to right. You can choose to not count spaces in the grid where cards are no longer in place, or you can choose to count such vacancies, it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters, whatever method you choose to select cards is whether or not the person lands on the card you want to reveal.

Let’s suppose you have used a variety of means to move from card to card for five different times without landing on the card you want to reveal. This means there are now only four cards left on the grid. Now, for the sixth method it turns out the ending spot is the center spot which is the card you want to reveal as the final one. At this point, you simply FORCE this card to be the final one by scooping up all of the remaining cards except this one. The card you want to reveal is now the lone card on the grid. I guarantee people will be astounded that you have used what seems like some random, non-sensical method to get to this point and reveal the desired card.

If at any point anyone questions your methods, particularly if you scoop up a bunch of cards at the end when you have been discarding the “chosen” card in every previous round, simply ask the person who has challenged you in a friendly way, “Who’s trick is this? Is it mine, or, is it yours?” -or- “Does it look like I don’t know what I’m doing? …Don’t answer that!”

I’ve had lots of fun with this and so will you.

Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, an eight-song EP from Modest Mouse, is a mellow affair. The release combines old tracks from Night on the Sun (an out-of-print vinyl-only EP), remixes, and outtakes from the The Moon and Antarctica sessions along with a couple new songs. “Willful Suspension of Disbelief” is a sedated intro that didn’t make it onto Moon, but it sets the perfect tranquil mood…
