A few privileged model train enthusiast will have the ample room, dedicated space and budget to fill a large room with their model train layout. Most of us however, have to plan carefully and efficiently use a limited space that may be afforded to us. If we are fortunate, we might get to use part of a spare bedroom or basement area, perhaps it might even be a limited holiday seasonal engagement in the living room area. Fortunately, no matter what the size of the area allotted, you can successfully build a train layout, from an unused small card table to filling a huge basement, or anything in between, it’s all possible.
Ideally you would like to place your train layout in an area that doesn’t get a large amount of potentially damaging foot traffic. Be creative and you will find that there are many possible places for your model railroad plans.
A bedroom layout might be a very feasible possibility. If you have a high, mounted bed that is large enough to contain a layout, you may very well be able to build a layout on a matching sized table that can easily be pushed under the bed when you are not using it.
When choosing the size and location of your model layout, you will have to take into account the size of the trains that you will run on it, things to consider include the general scale of the trains you want to run, for example O gauge or ho gauge, N gauge or others. Also of importance is the size or length of the trains within a particular scale ( as they do vary significantly). The combination of car length, scale and gauge directly dictate the square footage needed for a layout as well as the minimum radius for curved track sections (usually measured in diameter inches). If we take Lionel O gauge track as an example, we can see that there are several track radii available; these include 31-inch, 42-inch, 54-inch and 72-inch. Longer, more realistic train cars are unable to run on tighter turn curves, and would look very toy like if they were to do so. Large diameter turns also demand large layout spaces.
Most well planned model track setups can be expanded. A good plan will maximize the amount of track and model train enjoyment into the available space. You might start with a small 4×6 layout and expand it in sections by adding an additional table and using straight track sections to extend onto the newly added space. The modular nature of expansion really makes it worthwhile to build your train setups on custom-made, do it yourself tables. The tables need not be more complicated than basic carpentry would require and you can easily add the right sizes to your expanding layout as needed.
When expanding your model train plan, it is wise to assume that your trains may derail in the most hard to reach areas of the layout and plan accordingly so that you can have needed access at all sections.

Trying to find out what is the formula equation for slope on a O scale layout. I want to find out what would be the shortest and deepest slope my o scale locomotive would climb.
Seriously if anyone knows the answer to this question then they must have no life.
