In the past, most families owned a silver tea set. It was the focal point of afternoon tea gatherings and was brought out at the end of special meals or when entertaining guests. There are probably far few homes with silver tea sets these days, however if you do like the classic touch when entertaining and you are a tea drinker, you may be interested in purchasing one. If nothing else, they look lovely on display in your kitchen cabinet and can really add to your dining room or kitchen decor.
Another thing that many people do not realize is that silver is actually a very good conductor of heat, and as such using a silver teapot helps your tea to stay warmer for longer periods of time. So, as you can see, there are practical reasons for using a silver tea pot as well. A silver plated set often looks just as good as a sterling silver tea set, so you always have that option if you are not able to pay very much for a set, and you will find that the same heat conduction properties apply usually to silver coated tea pots as well.
A tea set consists of several items. The main pieces are the silver teapot, a small silver milk pitcher, a silver sugar container and small tongs which are used to transfer the sugar cubes to the teacup. Some also include a tray that the set sits on, and small silver teaspoons.
You may be concerned that it will be too much trouble to properly care for your tea set. While it does need a little more care than a porcelain or stainless steel tea set, it is still fairly easy to care for providing you do so on a fairly regular basis. Of course, one of the pros with choosing a metal tea set over a porcelain one is that it will not break or chip.
Silver does tend to tarnish, but with regular care this can be avoided. Dusting regularly will keep it fairly free from tarnish, as will storing it in a dry location. If any tarnish does appear, a simple cleaning with silver polish as soon as you see it will take care of it quickly.
A silver tea set is definitely classic and does add grace and charm to any table setting. If you are prepared to spend a little time on its upkeep, it is well worth the effort spent. Plus, you will have something that can be handed down from generation to generation.
