How far along did Canada get designing a HEAT round for the 25 Pounder?
How far along did Canada get designing a HEAT round for the 25 Pounder and would’ve it had the same problems of the 105mm Howitzer Heat rounds being fired from a rifled barrel? I believe the 17 Pounder Gun stopped its development. however I wonder if a HEAT round was produced for 25 Pounder guns during WW2, would’ve it been better in an anti tank situation than the pretty well hopeless super charge AP rounds used? This would have made the AC4 Tanks with the 25 Pounder gun in direct fire more lethal if they happened to come in contact with enemy armor (Not that Japanese had good tanks but would’ve faired better in North Africa.). I suppose it would have been compared with an early Stug III or the Italian Semovente 75/18 SPG (Except with a higher profile due also to having a turret.) , being mediocre in anti tank and anti personal situation but able to do both. Cheers John.
Using 25-pounders as anti-tank guns was a very temporary thing that lasted only a few months. You shouldn’t read too much into it.
The 25-pdr as an anti-tank gun with AP shot was a stopgap weapon designed for use in North Africa pending the arrival of proper 6-pounder and 17-pounder anti-tank guns. In 1942 British infantry battalions had only the Boys rifle for anti-tank defense – clearly not adequate. So for a short period 25-pounders were given AP shot and seconded down to the infantry battalions to provide short-range anti-tank defense – typically 2 guns per battalion. The other side of that is when providing AT defense up front to the battalions these guns were not providing artillery support to the brigades which is what they should have been doing. When 6-pounders and 17-pounders arrived in numbers they replaced the 2-pounders in the divisional anti-tank regiments and the 2-pounders were then freed up for use by the battalions. While the 2-pounder was hardly ideal as a battalion AT gun either in 1943, it was better than nothing and it allowed the 25-pounders to go back to doing what they do. After that there is no need to have a 25-pounder anti-armor round and I doubt 25-pounders had very many if any opportunities to shoot at tanks after the Libyan campaign. Remember, unlike the American 105mm which was used by tanks in the close-support role the 25-pounder was not. The 3-inch and 95mm CS guns were used. The 25-pounder was strictly Royal Artillery.
The United States Marine Corps after 1945 withdrew their M4A2 tanks with 75mm M3 guns from service and standardized on the M4A3 with 105mm howitzer. This was based on their wartime experience where the 75mm gun proved inadequate against many Japanese fortifications. Tank vs. Tank warfare in the Pacific was virtually unheard of and played no role in the decision. Had the Aussie’s deployed the Sentinal tank in the Pacific theater I think it would have been better served with the 25-pounder than with the 17-pounder for similar reasons. I wouldn’t even worry about encountering a Japanese tank and if you did, shoot it up with standard HE. You will kill it, I guarantee.
