Is it true that they have no street lights in England?
This is probably a stupid question, but I’ve never been there and I’m not as world-savvy as I guess I should be. Anyway, I heard someone make a vague comment the other day about how England uses traffic circles instead of street lights, thus basically eliminating rush hour traffic. True or false?
Traffic circles (roundabouts) are not used instead of street lights (traffic lights), they are used instead of four way stop signs. So in answer to your question we have as many street lights as you do in the US, they are sometimes used at road junctions and frequently used at pedestrian crossings. The person who gave you this information was incorrect, what we do have is many traffic circles so they were correct about this. We do not have many 4-way stop signs, or they are as infrequent in the UK as traffic circles are in the US.
As for eliminating, it doesn’t, but without the need for all four lanes to stop and then proceed, it allows many cars to proceed and flow at the same time.
