Can someone please tell me the story behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and why is is so important?
Also why its guarded 24/7?
Ah, this is part of the confusion, the “mis-direction” of the mass media. There are actually several “Tombs of the Unknown Soldiers”, starting before the Revolutionary War; another for the Civil War; different ones for wars since the Civil War. There is one in Biloxi, Mississippi for the Confederates.
Why is it so important? Because every soldier deserves to be honored for his sacrifice. Because these soldiers are “unknown but to God”, the Tombs of the Unknown is a way to honor them. We can’t put their names on the tomb; we can’t call on their survivors to exclaim their virtues. We can do naught but to honor them as “unknowns”. The main one is guarded; it is considered an honor to be one of the guards and only a select few are qualified to do so. As to why, because they are so important for our country.
