What type of puppets are the Sesame Street Puppets?
I have an assignment at school on The Main Ways Puppets Have Been Used Throughout History, and for the current time I’m giving the example of the puppets on the children’s TV show, Sesame Street.
Are the puppets they use on Sesame Street String, Rod, Hand puppets or what?
What type of puppets are they?
Actually, Sesame Street puppets are sort of their own ‘type’. They’re ‘muppets’, which is what Jim Henson called them. Although foam puppets had been used for some time before Jim came along, he created a particular style or method of putting foam pieces together.
Although these puppets do use rods (and sometimes gloves for the puppeteers to use instead of foam hands), they are generally not referred to as rod puppets.
They certainly do not use strings, and ‘hand puppets’ are more descriptive of Punch and Judy style puppets.
I’m not aware of any voice editing: in fact, all of the puppeteers for Sesame Street and The Muppets do the voices of the characters themselves, live.
Big Bird and Snuffleupagus are ‘costume’ puppets or ‘body’ puppets. These are just mascot-style costumes that people wear.
