Best Scale for WWII dioramas?
I don’t really wargame, but I like building and making dioramas and was wondering what your favorite scale is? I want something detailed, but cheap, and something that I can find at a store that every neighborhood would have
Just to clear it up, I want a lot of soldiers, for big battles.
1:87th doesn’t seem as common. I want something that I don’t have to go to a specialized store to buy. Something that can just pop up at places like “Michaels” or “Hobby Lobby”
The answer to this is going to be different depending of what you want to accomplish with your diorama. If you want a highly detailed battle scene with a bombed out town or a major tank battle then you should go with 1/87 or even smaller like 1/144. 1/87 is also known as HO scale in railroad circles and you should be able to get all kinds of buildings, vehicles, and landscaping. There is military equipment in this scale you should be able to view it in a Walthers HO catalog. Any good hobby shop should have one. 1/144 scale is pretty close to model railroad N scale and you should be able to use a lot of the items available in this scale. Again a Walthers N scale catalog would be a big help here. Walmart has 1/144 scale tanks and planes in the 2-3 dollar per unit range.
If you want to model scenes with a vehicle and a few soldiers then consider 1/35 scale. There are quite a few military vehicles made in this scale that build into beautiful models. The down side is that there is less scenery like buildings available but because of the larger size they may not be practical to model anyway.
For aircraft 1/48 scale is a good selection. This is also known as O scale in model railroad circles so buildings, people etc are available. Its also pretty easy to scratchbuild items because everything is 1/4 in to the scale foot.
