Once upon a time there was a seventy-something widow named Gladys B., affectionately called Goldie by her mah jong pals thanks to the uncompromising shade she continued to have Monte dye her hair every fourth Tuesday of every month.

Gladys, or Goldie, as she much preferred to be called, lived in a well-kept condo in Ridge, Long Island, New York. Her husband Abe had passed in 2006, leaving a modest life-insurance policy that paid for his well-attended funeral, covered all of the credit card bills, and even the year’s property taxes with enough left over to bank a couple of thousand.

Her friends encouraged her to keep up her active lifestyle, so she went on the bus trip to the Poconos sponsored by the Senior Center, continued to attend Jazzercize at the Rec Center, and by 2008 Goldie was back to her credit cards for clothes, gifts, and eventually even food, because although taxes, maintenance charges, and insurance stayed the same, without Abe’s Social Security and pension payments, Goldie’s income was about half what it had been before he died.

Luckily for Goldie, she read about Reverse Mortgages in the newspaper, and when she got a letter in the mail from a lender promising to Make her Life Easier by Easing her Financial Burden, she called the 800 number. Mr. Baere at 800, however, had an office in Florida. He gave her the number of a Reverse Mortgage Counselor in Wisconsin. Goldie did not feel particularly comfortable with a lender she would never meet face to face, but fortune was in her favor.

Because next day in the mail came another letter! Lots of print on the outside of the envelope, including the words, US Government! And Urgent! Inside, they knew her name, her age, even Abe’s age! This must be legit! In red letters at the top of the letter inside were the words “President Obama’s Stimulus Package” and “Your Reply Requires Before April 31, 2010 Or This Offer Will Expire!” Call John X. Bear at 212-555-1212. Uh-oh. A New York City number. Goldie’s call was returned from a number that showed up on her caller ID as being from Grizzly, Texas. She didn’t pick up.

The Bare Facts:

1. MISLEADING ADVERTISING is rampant in the senior marketplace.

2. READ the fine print: that letter from the US Government disclosed inside NO association with our government.

3. Check EVERY lender with the Better Business Bureau and the local Chamber of Commerce.

4. Ask for a PERSONAL REFERRAL – is there a former client you can speak with? Maybe one of your mah jong pals had done a Reverse Mortgage?

Goldie finally found a lender that was JUST RIGHT…… She checked the internet, the Chamber of Commerce, and called a very pleasant woman who had also written several articles on the subject of Reverse Mortgages. This loan officer was able to give her the phone numbers of three women in similar situations who had done Reverse Mortgages and who she could talk to about the whole process.

They sat down to breakfast one morning and discussed Goldie’s needs, her budget, her debts and her doubts and expectations as well. Goldie felt like she’d found a friend at last! In about a month and a half, she sat down at her own kitchen table for the Reverse Mortgage closing and after the 3-day rescission period, everyone lived happily ever after.

I still talk to Goldie – she invited me to mah jong, and I took her and Sylvie out to lunch, because Sylvie is having some money problems now that Howie’s gone
