Coleman is one of the best companies that manufacture canoes and other sports equipment. The best of brands and qualities doesn’t mean however that they are invulnerable to flaw. Coleman canoes are still breakable, and it’s better if you prepare yourself by learning a few DIY tips for fixing them.
Parts of a Canoe
The first step for repairing a Coleman canoe is gaining knowledge of the different parts of a canoe. Although some fix-it manuals contain clear instruction on how to solve common canoe problems, these manuals rarely come with photos that identify each and every part of a canoe. Without the proper knowledge, if you read “Check the stern for holes”, your reaction would probably be “check the what?”
For this lesson, just search the Internet for an illustration of a canoe with its parts properly identified. This lesson will surely take you only minutes to master.
The Scary Hole
Ask any canoe loving individual about the scariest thing that could happen to him, and he’ll surely tell you it’s having a hole in his canoe. Holes are scary things. Its size doesn’t matter. If you don’t have anything to stuff them with, you’ll slowly feel you and your canoe slowly sinking to the mysterious depths of the sea.
Hence, our second tip on repairing a Coleman canoe is all about fixing holes in emergency, high-pressured situations.
Quick Repair Supplies: duct tape and pine pitch.
Papering the Walls - If you realize in the middle of the sea your canoe has a hole on it, the best thing to do first is locate the hole. Make sure there’s only one. Repairing holes on your Coleman canoe is quite easy, just as long as you don’t lose your head. Cover the hole with double layers of duct tape. That will comfortably see you through till the next day or so. If it’s a leaky seam, use pine pitch as covering. Pine pitch is especially useful because it’s water-proof and extremely durable.
Permanent Repair – When you’ve reached dry land, you should immediately find a way to permanently repair your Coleman canoe. Dry the canoe thoroughly first. Afterwards, check your canoe for any dents. Get a piece of fiberglass cloth that sufficiently covers the hole and stick it using a mixture of fiberglass resin and paste. Smooth the treatment with sandpaper when it dries and hardens.
Purchasing Repair Kits
While it’s okay to be resourceful, why subject yourself to more challenges when you can create handy solutions for repairing your Coleman canoe? All you need to do is purchase repair kits.
Fiberglass Kit – This kit usually consists of fiberglass cloth, chemicals like fiberglass resin and paste, a brush, an aluminum can and a wooden stick that you can use to mix the chemicals together.
Wood / Canvas Repair Kit - Besides containing the usual chemicals and solutions, these kits also provide ample supply of nails and screws.
Other types of repair kits you can take with you while riding your Coleman canoe are polyethylene repair kits and cane and spline kits to repair the cane seat of your Coleman canoe. As can be seen there are many repair options for your Coleman canoe.

Resin casting – How do I get started?
I need to make a prototype for a medical device that I intend to patent. It will be made of soft silicone.
How do I get started – I know nothing about this.
Is there a kit I can buy?
Most of your better product is going to be a two-part mixture, much like epoxy. However, you will also need a mold if you’re going to cast, so you’d make a model of your piece, then a mold of that, then you’d cast your final prototype. If your final product is going to be silicone, then resin isn’t really going to do the trick–it’ll be hard as a rock. However, there are silcone based products out there. I’ve used mold making materials and plastics from this place : www.smooth-on.com I’d reccommend Oomoo for molds.
