Kitchen cabinets really take a beating, between your taking things in and out constantly, water droplets during washing, coffee splashes, nicks and scratches, and children’s finger prints. You will definitely need to revamp your cabinets every so often. In this article we will give you a few pointers on how to make your kitchen cabinets look brand new, with just a little face-lift using paint.
The first major thing to ask yourself is should I be using latex paint or oil paint. Latex paint is the more common of the two, but the great thing about oil-based paint is it is really easy to keep clean. So in places like your kitchen and bathroom where sanitization is an issue, you may want to consider using oil paint instead. Now you must keep in mind that oil paint is harder to keep up with, and harder to paint with. Oil paint is harder to clean up if you make a mistake, whereas mistakes in latex paint can be fixed with soap and water.
Airbrush method of applying paint will have the best effect on your kitchen cabinets, but it can be difficult to work with. Be sure to cover all areas of your kitchen that you do not intend to paint. You have the choice of either renting or buying the spray equipment; however, make sure you understand the instructions, so you do not end up with a big mess.
The second major thing to keep in mind is all of the work you must do to your cabinets even before you start painting. You must remove all cabinet doors, which makes it much easier to paint both the outside and the inside of the cabinets. You must also completely clean the insides and outsides of the cabinet, sand them if necessary, before applying paint.
Make sure that you mark off what cabinet door goes where, as you do not want to have to guess when you are putting them back. If you have any scratches or nicks, make sure you fill this before painting to ensure you get a smooth painting surface. You can also sand the doors to ensure you have the best surface.
