Mini Fig
(8.12*10^7) – (6.20*10^6) = X (Significant Fig/Digs)?
Yeah. I have this sheet of Intro To Physics work, it’s 1am, I’ve been at this for hours. I’m tired. However, I need to finish this sheet. I Just…don’t get it.
One of my problems is this:
(8.12*10^7) – (6.20*10^6)
The ^# means it should be that little mini number in the corner. To the ___th power. …Whatever, haha.
How would I go about answering this? I know how to do basic sig. dig./figs. (example: 4.07 + 3.2 = 7.3)
Or an answer… I can usually figure out what to do if I have one problem with an answer to it. But, we didn’t discuss this, we have no book for the class, nada. And I have a test coming up.
Any help here?
Do you have access to a calculator for the problems? The easiest way would be to put it into a calculator. Simply input (8.12 * (10^7)) – (6.20 * (10^6)) to get your answer… put in scientific notation. (If you don’t feel like reading my whole explanation, the answer is at the end.) 
However if you have to show your work by hand, you can think about it like this…
10^7 = 10,000,000 Multiplying 8.12 by 10,000,000 would be 81,200,000. Do get this, you can simply move the decimal place to the right the according to the number of zeros in the 10^7 which is obviously 7.
10^6 = 1,000,000 Multiplying 6.20 by 1,000,000 would apply the same method. Move the decimal 6 places to the right this time. So you have 6,200,000.
Now you can subtract. 81,200,000 – 6,200,000 = 75,000,000. Another way to look at this would be to just for a moment, take away 5 zeros from each number. This would look like 812 – 62 = 750. Then add the five zeros back on to get 75,000,000.
Now in the problem, you have 3 significant figures. You can easily show this in scientific notation. Move the decimal place (which at this point at the end of the number [75,000,000.]) Move the decimal 7 places to the left. And since you need 3 sig figs, you would be left with 7.50. Count how many digit places you moved the decimal. That would be 7. This is how you determine the power you will raise 10 to in the scientific notation. 10^7
So your final answer would be with 3 sig figs. 7.50*10^7
I really hope this helps, is correct, and makes sense. If its not i should be shot because i am in honors precalc and an advanced science class.
