Matchbox Superfast
Matchbox Superfast

I used to absolutely LOVE Matchbox cars as a kid.
For me – along with all the other fantastic toys that so defined my sheer childhood pleasure of the 1970′s – these wonderful mini cars that came in all sorts of cool designs and colours were just an absolute joy to collect. I have fond memories of sitting on the concrete verandah of the flat I lived in as a kid, racing all my beloved Matchbox cars up and down the sloping path.
My particular favourite Matchbox car was the Rat Rod Dragster, which was painted in a lovely shade of green and which always seemed to be just that little bit faster than all the others. Well, after all, it was one of the Matchbox “Superfast” series! And despite its relative slowness speed wise, I did have a soft spot for red London bus too. I just could not fault these fantastic cars at all, as I just adored everything about them. I used to get a real buzz out of going down to the local toy shop and browsing through all those wonderfully coloured match boxes containing all those fantastic miniature motors, wondering which one should I add next to my collection. I must have had ‘em all.
In addition to releasing the cars singularly, Matchbox also produced two huge games: Matchbox Switch A Track and Matchbox Motorway. I had Matchbox Switch A Track, but for some reason I can’t quite remember, I never actually got round to purchasing Matchbox Motorway. Maybe it was because I could never really master getting the set up right in the first game, where you had to fiddle around inserting tiny plastic pegs into the bottom of the cars to make them go round the track, Scalextric style. Being a child of very short patience when it came to assembling such a complicated game, I gave up in the end! Still, having said that, somehow the Matchbox boxed game, for me, didn’t seem to have quite the same kind of magic as the individually sold cars did. But that’s just my opinion.
I know that many people still collect these old Matchbox cars, and indeed there are numerous sites on the internet – including Matchbox collectors’ clubs, Matchbox car valuation guides etc. – which cater splendidly for the needs of the Matchbox buff. eBay, of course, also regularly has dealers selling their old stock of Matchbox cars. And don’t forget car boot sales too, where I’ll bet many a little gem of a Matchbox car – just like a rare old book – has turned up!
Being the Webmaster of a large antiques website, I have certainly seen fit to include a page on Matchbox cars, as alongside vintage board games, old Action Men figures and antique Teddy Bears, these wonderful toys have undoubtedly earned their place as a much collected, much loved – and much valued – item of childhood.
