Where’s Spider-mans place in the new marvel cinematic universe?
I understand that Marvel is currently setting up it’s own film universe, replacing all the old marvel films and starting afresh with Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America and the new Avengers Movie. But, out of all the rumors of future productions after the Avengers movie, I haven’t heard anything about spider-man, despite the upcoming reboot. Does anyone know whether spider-man will join in with the rest or stay independent??
This can’t happen for the foreseeable future because of the way the film rights to the characters are owned. Marvel has its own movie production business, Marvel Studios, which independently owns the rights to produce films based on certain characters including Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Captain America who either have films of their own that are produced by Marvel Studios or will appear as part of The Avengers. Most of these movies will have cameos from Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury or Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark and feature other little “Easter eggs” like Tony Stark using Captin America’s shield in Iron Man 2. This places them all in the same cinematic “universe.”
Marvel had to reacquire a lot of these characters. For instance it did not independently own Hulk for the first movie starring Eric Bana, but got the rights back fully for The Incredible Hulk, starring Ed Norton, so are now free to use Hulk in The Avengers.
Marvel Studios does not independently own the rights to produce movies based on Spider-Man (owned by Sony/Columbia pictures) or the X-Men (Fox.) It’s stupidly complicated because they do own the Deadpool character and want to make a film about him, but if they did it could have no reference to the Weapon X program or any of the events of X Men Origins: Wolverine, because these things are owned by Fox.
So Spider-man will remain in his own universe, which is being rebooted with the new movie. X-Men will also be in their universe, with the new First Class movie being a prequel to the original trilogy set in the same universe.
Unless Marvel Studios can fully regain the rights from Sony, or do some kind of deal, Spider-man can’t appear in The Avengers, which I think is fine because he’s not a true Avenger anyway and it would be overkill. What I like about Spider-man is that the public don’t trust him and his identity is mostly secret, with the Avengers they are officially government-sanctioned and their identities are known to each other and often to the public as well.
