Magic the Gathering (MTG) has been going as a popular CCG (Collectable Card Game) now for many years, and one of the main things that defines Magic the Gathering is the Collectable side of its CCG status. By this, I mean that it has a rarity system to its cards. This article describes how you can identify the rarity of your Magic the Gathering cards.
You may or may not be aware of this rarity system, and if not it has been staring you in the face all this time. There are two main ways to tell the rarity of a Magic the Gathering card:
1. Look at the colour of the set symbol
For all cards printed since the Exodus set was released in 1998, the colour of the set symbol on the right hand side defines its rarity as such:
- Black – Common
- Silver – Uncommon
- Gold – Rare
- Purple – Mythic Rare / Timeshifted
A note should be made about the final categorisation of rarities, Mythic Rares have only been introduced to the rarity system since Shards of Alara set in 2008, and Timeshifted cards were only introduced for the single set called Time Spiral in 2006.
2. Cards with a set symbol, but are older than the Exodus Set
For those expansion sets before Exodus (Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark, Fallen Empires, Homelands, Ice Age, Alliances, Cold Snap, Mirage, Visions, Weatherlight, Tempest and Stronghold) that have a card symbol, but no colour variation, you may be able to get a rough idea of the card’s rarity if you have a large card collection by how many copies of that card you have, but this is tentative at best. The only way to definitively find out the rarity of these cards is to consult an online Magic the Gathering card reference such as the one provided by Wizards of the Coast called Gatherer.
3. Cards with no set symbol
All Core Sets before Sixth Edition was released in 1999 have no set icon on their cards at all. As per the older Expansion sets mentioned above, the only definitive way to identify the rarity of these cards is to consult a full card reference like Gatherer.
Knowing the rarity of a Magic the Gathering card is vital to understanding a card’s value, generally, the higher the rarity, the more your Magic the Gathering (MTG) card is worth.
