Locomotive Tender
Locomotive Tender

How far could a steam locomotive go on with the boiler and tender full (miles)?
Somthing like the 2-6-2 prairie, the daylight 4-8-4 or the big boy 4-8-8-4
That’s tough to answer because there are so many variables.A good average would probably be about 90 miles. They carry enough fuel for longer distances but the water needs to be refilled more often. The one thing you don’t want to do is run out of water. They go boom if the crown sheet goes dry.The railroad i work for runs 2 steam engines. The Challenger frequently pulls two tenders behind it.The 844 was here earlier this year and the crew told me they stopped to refill the tender every 100 miles at the most.
Edit Yep Bob,I worked with Low Water many times. He was one of the legends of the Cal P.He was one of my dad’s best buddies. When i left Oakland he was still working and if memory serves he was 73 at the time.
By the way Bob,do you remember Emily Friend? She contacted me the other day. She’s a chief dispatcher in Omaha now.
