A person’s hair contributes greatly to the physical appearance of an individual. That is why almost all of us take extra care in setting and polishing this crowning glory. There are different hairstyles to choose from which would suit various hair needs and types. There are establishments, as well as professionals who offer services that specialize in haircare such as the beauty or hair salons and barbershops.
Traditionally, women tend to visit the salon to have their hair fixed while men prefer simply having their clippings in a barbershop. However as time modernized, this convention has also changed. Nowadays both men and women can choose to visit the salons or sport hairstyles that were traditionally classified for the opposite sex. So both the salon and the barbershop now offers a unisex service.
Hairstyling is not only limited to cutting or trimming, it also encompasses weaving, coloring, hair extensions, perms, curling and other forms of styling and adding texture to someone’s hair.
Hair cutting is done to maintain the specific form and shape of the hairstyle which can vary from simply trimming the uneven ends to completely shaving the head. The process starts by spraying water to the hair or washing the entire head which now only feels cleaner but also provides an easily cutting for the cutter/hairstylist. Hair drying using a hair dryer, is also part of the hair styling process. Not only is it to speed up the hair’s drying process but it is also used to help sculpt the hair and add volume to a certain hairstyle.
Here are the few hairstyles which both the men and women of today choose to wear in accordance to the appearance they want to achieve:
- An Afro, or the shortened ‘fro’, is a hairstyle that seems like a halo, cloud or ball on the head.
- The Blowout hair style, sometimes called ‘Temp’ or “Brooklyn Fade’, was believed to have originated from a Brooklyn barbershop and gained popularity in early 2000s. From the edge of the hairline, hair is faded from skin to 1-2 cm in length. The rest of the hair I usually left from 2-5 cm, as per client’s preference, and then spiked up in chunks by hair gel or mousse. This hairstyle was popularized by the Gotti Boys.
- A classic hairstyle that is common among women but some men do wear is the Bob Cut. Often complemented with bangs or fringe, the hair is usually cut straight around the head at jaw- or chin-length.
- There are three types of Bobs:
- Chinese Bob, where hair is cut at the neckline and bobbed around the edge.
- A-line Bob, is a typical bob cut with front hair slightly longer.
- Pageboy, hair is worn straight and could go as long as shoulder length.
- A Buzz Cut, where hair is cut short and sheared off by a razor and no more than three fourths of the hair remains.
- Cornrows is a hairstyle that came from Ethiopia but has been popularized by African Americans. The hair is styled into a series of French braids like locks that seems clinging from the head down the back of the neck.
- Dreadlocks vary in size, tidiness and length. The hair is dread-locked in individual sections either by backcombing, braiding or hand rolling.

Is there any way to make ordinary brown clay a ceramic piece?
I’m trying to sculpt something into a head like thing, and all I have is clay. Is there any way to convert it into something that can withstand heat and water?
I am not sure what you mean by ordinary brown clay.
High fire clay is converted in to bisque ware by the initial firing in a kiln.
It goes further conversion when you apply glaze and do a high firing.
If you are talking about oil based clay or plasticine for ordinary brown clay. The best way to convert your sculpture into something that will withstand heat is to do mold making and cast your pieces into another material.
There are classes around the country in ceramics and sculpture.
