Right, down to business:
Hermione casts the spell on her parents 'obliviate' because she wants to stop them from being tortured. She has already told her parents quite a bit about Harry and so if Voldemort or the Death Eaters want to find out info about her whereabouts then her parents will be safe.
She modifies their memories, so that they:
-forget they have a daughter
-think that their names are Wendell and Monica Williams
- think that their life's ambition is to move to Australia (which they do)
However, the movies have got one thing wrong, 'obliviate' is the spell to remove memories, not modify them....
