Is it bad for the transmission if the car is parked in the first gear?
I know that it is best to use both the parking brake and leave it in first gear while parking but say if the parking break is not functioning, does it harm the transmission in any way if only the gear is used to stop the car from moving? Thanks.
No. People with automatics almost never use the parking brake. Although the transmissions are different the mechanics involved are very similar. The transmission is locked up, either by the gears in a manual or the parking mechanism on an auto, which in turn keeps the drive train from moving. I hardly ever use the emergency brake unless I am on a steep hill. It’s not really necessary and I’d much rather save wear on my cable. That way it stays nice and snug for when I want to yank it going around corners and slide lol.
