When the fire truck lights are off, does that mean someone died?
Our neighbors (one of them has cancer) had a fire truck and ambulance outside their house, and when they drove away (with him in back) the fire truck lights were off. My mom said that usually means the person died, is that true?
Many cities and towns now have their fire department personnel respond with the fire truck to assist the ambulance personnel on scene. The fire truck arrives usually ahead of the ambulance and administers basic life support until the more highly trained paramedics arrives.
At this point all personnel will work for the benefit of the patient. Once the patient is transferred into the ambulance the fire departments role is over. The fire truck will then return to the fire station and prepare for the next call. no lights or siren is required because they are not going to an emergency.
The ambulance will then transport the patient to a hospital. If the patient is in a life threatening condition, then they will use lights and siren to bring that person to the hospital. If the patient is not in a life threatening condition, they will travel to the hostipal with the regular flow of traffic. The use of the lights and siren is in no way an indicator of the patients being alive.
The above is a common way in which fire departments and ambulance corps handle emergencies, your city may be different.
