Eastern European Traditions?
I married a man from Eastern Europe who I absolutely love. He and his family immigrated to America from Bulgaria when he was 13. He’s everything I could ever want and more; however, I HATE his family. It’s like they demand respect, and feel the need to always give unsolicited advice, and expect us to always do what they want. Infact, if I ever do something that doesn’t meet with their express approval, they tell me how disprespectful I am, and how they are older than me, so I should do what they want etc. They also seem to hate me if I don’t follow their traditions to the letter. I’m all for incorporating some of them in our lives, but I have a family and a culture I’m contributing to this marriage too. They say that since I married a Bulgarian, I should adhere to what they want. I think that’s insane. Are all Bulgarians like this? I have a young son, and don’t want them in our lives if they are doing this all the time. Also, my husband doesn’t understand how big this is….
Of course your husband doesn’t understand, this is the way he was raised. This is one reason why intercultural marriages do not work out. One of the biggies in fact. It is too bad you didn’t get some premarital counseling so you could both appreciate where the other was coming from. It is not too late to do that, now, before the resentments build up anymore. Tell your husband that the conflict is making you very unhappy (not angry) and that you would like both of you to get some help with understanding where the other is coming from. If he loves you he will even if he doesn’t understand why. You need an objective observer to help you talk about your different expectations of marriage and family life and to create a new family structure that you both can live with. Neither of you will be happy if this becomes a tug of war. It may be that there is no compromise position that can satisfy you both and that will be too bad for all three of you. Go now, find a therapist or counselor who understands inter cultural relationships.
