This is one of those questions that just popped into my head the other day. And it’s bugging me to be honest. We’ve now had 6 Star Wars movies in total right? But I’m finding myself torn between the lightsaber fighting skills in the original trilogy versus the acrobatics that you all got to see in The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars and especially in Revenge of the Sith.
Ok I know that the skills you saw in the latest set of movies were incredible but some of it seemed so passionless and staged (yes yes I know it was a movie) that you almost got bored watching the several hundred moves per second kinda stuff. Don’t get me wrong – watching Master Yoda kick Stormtrooper/Sith butt was something I’ve always wanted to see. And despite some of the insane acrobatics it was done really well.
So while you’re sitting there reading this have a quick think to yourself – what was your favourite lightsaber battle in any of the Star Wars movies. You can pick from the old or new movies but you need to pick one definitive piece of Jedi or Sith combat. This is just something to ponder before I explain why I’m torn in my choices.
Ok now that you’ve picked your favourite moment I’m going to share mine. It has to be the lightsaber duel between Luke and Vader at the end of Return of The Jedi. Even taking into account all the amazing lightsaber fight scenes from the new movies they just simply lack the atmosphere that the Luke Vs Vader duel had. For me it was a combination of the musical score, the pace of the combat and the intensity that the actors put into it. It “felt” more real than almost anything the new movies could offer – a real case of less is more.
Does that mean that I didn’t enjoy the new movies? Well everyone knows that Lucas fluffed it big time with Phantom Menace and Anakin Skywalker was about as unbelievable and wooden a character that you’d get without actually carving him from pine. The Phantom Menace had only one saving grace and that was the brief lightsaber duel between Obi Wan and Darth Maul. It’s the only other piece of lightsaber combat that comes close to Return of the Jedi. It matched the “tone” of what still draws me to the screen for those final moments of Jedi.
And yes of course I was glad to see what a fully trained Jedi and Jedi master could really do. It just seems that they got a bit carried away and thought that quantity would win out over quality any day – it just ain’t the case guys!

I’ve been wondering , the guy with the red skin, was the first guy that came before darth vader, was he the sith’s new server?
Well, considering that Phantom Menace was the first in the chronological order and that Anakin (darth vader) was NINE YEARS OLD at the time I’m going to say yes.
