Do you like dressing up and starring as a pirate? If someone says “Hi there”, do you respond with “Ahoy there matee!”? The pirate bug will begin sweeping the world again this year on September 19th.
This quirky event continues to retain a high level of popularity since its inception in 1996. Two guys from Oregon named John Baur and Mark Summers started the pirate greetings day which soon became a recognised international event.
To get the ball rolling, they gave themselves pirate names: John Baur as Ol’ Chumbucket and Mark Summers became Cap’n Slappy. The two observers of the now well known holiday began the craze in their hometown of Albany, Oregon in the US. They decreed that on this day, everyone would greet one another with a whimsical pirate style manner. So, instead of “Hello”, you would say “Ahoy, matey” or if ordering a drink “bring me one noggin of rum, will you matey?”
Other examples include “Avast” which means “stop and give attention”, and “Grog” referring to alcoholic drinks. Of course, you may hear the more well known phrases such as “Shiver me timbers” and “Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest, Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum…”
The day of pirate parody has swept the world. Most people enjoy dressing up as a sea faring scallywag. Many online costume stores offer a range of pirate costumes to suit any age. Starring as a pirate became a much loved pastime many years ago. Now, no matter what, ‘Talk Like A Pirate Day’ invites the world to embody the role of a pirate as part of a fun packed international event.
The whole interest had sprung from the tales written by leading authors writing stories set during the golden age of piracy originating in the 17th century. Most notable tales include Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and Peter Pan by J M Barrie.
In fact, personalised books allow you to star as a pirate in these novels. You can allow your imagination to whisk you away to the golden age of piracy. The personalised books will allow you to learn pirate speech and play the part of a pirate without having to dress up. Most notably, Captain Hook and his pirate ship ‘Jolly Roger’ became very well known from the Peter Pan tale.
Talk like a Pirate day brings “Arrs” and “Ahoys” as people fill the streets in carnival style, waving their cutlasses and drinking rum (or whatever alcoholic beverage can fill the flask). Such events include the CAMRA Pirate Pub Crawl in Nottinghamshire to pub crawls across the country where the landlords willingly offer discounts on a range of beverages.
The ‘Talk Like A Pirate’ day web site attracts thousands of fans each year. YouTube has been flooded with a slew of videos from the fans. While many may see this day as another excuse for binge drinking in the UK, do not perceive the event that way as the whole event supports a good cause. Last year, most of the events supported the Marie Curie Cancer Care Trust fund.
So, on September 19th, “A-pirating we go”. Dress like a pirate and talk a pirate on ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’.

What is a good value for money Camcorder?
It’s needed to film our little son and his milestones such as crawling. We want to be able to load the footage on our PC. So there won’t be any Steven Speilberg classics, or anything like that.
Also we want to able to attach it to the TV.
I’m thinking a budget of around $500 should cover it.
Any ideas, anyone?
I have the Kodak EasyShare C913. I was going to buy just a camera, but my boyfriend convinced me to go with a digital camera that does video too. I am so glad I did. Now I can do pictures and video all on one device. It uses a memory card- I have a 8gb card, which was maybe $40. I can record hours of video on this and have thousands of pictures. The quality is excellent too! It’s 9.2 megapixels and has 3x digital zoom. I am really happy with it, it’s so easy to use. I’ve had it since October and only changed the batteries (2 AAs) once. I use the camera almost everyday.
The camera was $129 at Walmart.
