Cosmic Microwave Background?

In Dec 2007 Astronomy mag CMB article very good read for me. One question though, why does Stephen Hawkins believe it is possibly the biggest and most important discovery of the millenium?

As an extra question where are some website with Astro physics math equations? Looking for some light reading.

Now, the story is a little strange. Although Einsteins equations solve in an expanding universe and Edwin Hubble found the first prove in redshift of distant galaxies (the more distant, the faster they move away from us), many scientists at that time preferred a “steady state” universe (looking everywhere the same and always the same). Although more and more observations favored an expanding universe, the idea of an expanding universe did sound very strange. Especially because then everything, space-time, matter, energy came out of blue with a big bang.

Now, the solution of Einsteins equations allowed precisely to predict size and quantum theory provided how matter behaves. At first the universe was opaque because it was so hot that Hydrogen was ionized and light-rays were scattered by free electrons after very short distance.

For gases expansion means cooling down. So at a certain time, the Universe became cool enough for Hydrogen recombination – Hydrogen nucleus catching all the free electrons who emitted light when caught. The universe became almost istantly transparent for light with the biggest flash ever. Expanding and cooling down further, lightwaves stretched together with the expanding universe. And big bang theory predicted at which wavelength we should see the remains of this flash nowadays. And precisely where predicted, the background radiation was found. Since then “Steady State” was out because it could not deal with this.

But there is even more behind. Because the flash was mainly created by Hydgogen recombination, the varations in intesity of background radiation are a direct measure for how uniform matter was distributed in early universe. Or in other words; how matter was distributed less than 1 million years after the big bang. And we do see that now, about 14.5 billion years later!

Even more: big bang model was extended by “inflation model” for the very, very, very early universe – aged by far less than a twinkle. This model forsee a very uniform distribution of matter at time of the flash while other thought density must have varied much more in order to allow formation of galaxies.

Measuring fluctuations – differences of intesity in various directions – we can “see” and calculate how uniform matter was distributed at the time of the flash. And it seems, inflation model predicted correctly, so it was a big prove for this model as well.

While researching the 2012 end-date of the Maya Calendar, John Major Jenkins decoded the Maya’s galactic cosmology. The Maya discovered that the periodic alignment of the Sun with the center of the Milky Way galaxy is the formative influence on human evolution. These alignments also define a series of World Ages. The fourth age ends on December 21, 2012, when an epoch chapter in human history will…
